My friends David Chun and Sandee Shin tied the knot this weekend at a beautiful ceremony in Los Angeles. Both the bride and groom are designers and everything from the invites to the custom labels on the wine to the one if a kind body chain jewelry the bridesmaids wore was perfection. Their theme was navy and magenta, so I borrowed some inspiration from the couple and I cut them this card using my Silhouette Cameo. CHUNgratulaSHINs you two!

My friend Jeremy had an All Black Everything themed birthday this weekend. I had the idea of using rolls of black bulletin board paper to transform my friends dining room into a bat cave dance floor. We wallpapered the walls and made stalactite paper cones dripping down from the ceiling. I had hoped to get more photos after the party but during the last few songs the people dancing tore the installation apart and it was completely destroyed.

Chili Con Carnival

Our friends Jason & Ethan met at a monthly super club & they both have February birthdays so naturally they’ve started to celebrate their births & their love of food at a joint party. Last year the two of them roasted an entire pig. It was epic. This year Jason’s fiancé Becca & Ethan’s wife Jenny organized a chili cook off where the boys were the judges. The ladies took inspiration from a South Park episode where Cartman organized a “Chili Con Carnival,” but unlike the episode the girls did not kill the birthday boys parents and put them in the chili. The girls just liked the name & the theme, phew. I was asked to South Park-ize the birthday boys so tee shirts could be made for the chili contest contestants. I worked from the below pic of last years pig roast & from screen captures of the South Park episode & I think their likenesses came out pretty well.

Our house in Elysian Heights has a large orange tree out front. I decided I wanted to bring some the tree inside so I made this paper cut of oranges today. Kinda reminds me of Marimekko.

My cousin Meredith celebrates Bill Murray’s birthday every year by throwing him a party. She hopes that one day Bill will attend. For last years party she asked if I could make a Bill Murray piñata. I chose to make a Steve Zissou piñata from Wes Anderson’s The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou because the character wears a costume that is easily recognizable and was fun to make out of paper. Below is a picture of Stevsie just before he was beheaded by a toy golf club. I think I can see the fear in his little construction paper eyes in the picture.

In 2004 I transferred from College of Santa Fe to Savannah College of Art and Design to study motion graphics. Luckily SCAD requires all students to take general art foundations no matter what their major is. One of my first classes was Drawing I with Professor Dick Bjornseth and one of our first assignments was to accurately enlarge a celebrity head shot. I chose this candid shot of a young Elliot Gould. The final result is far from perfect but I love how I captured Mr. Gould’s eye brows and the drawing has hung in the bathroom of every apartment I’ve lived in since 2004.

My Grandmother Janet ~~Wamberg~~ ~~Clark~~ Byrne, nee Fortney, was a very classy and sophisticated woman. Here she is with her second husband Robert Kenneth Clark. My grandmother was the love of his life and the two of them traveled the world together. Despite her worldly adventures she was always at heart a girl from Kansas City. When I was a little girl she’d take me on shop ‘til you drop sprees down Michigan Avenue in Chicago and she’d always instruct me to use the bathroom before we left the condo so she wouldn’t have to stop shopping on account of a grade schoolers tiny bladder. This is what she would say to me, “Tinkle, pull the chain, and worsh you hands.” I like to imagine it’s what her mother said to her in the 1920s when she was a little girl. In memory of her and all of her magnificent quirks I made these three paper cut outs to hang in my bathroom.

I have nightmares every night. They are usually very vivid and if I spend too much time dwelling on them I might never get anything done. One dream however stuck with me so much I decided to illustrate it in a paper cut out collage. In the dream I was looking in a mirror and noticed I had a blue dashed line running across the front of my teeth. I went to try and rub it off and my teeth all snapped along the dotted line and fell into the sink and went down the drain. The sound of the enamel on porcelain sounded so real. I looked it up in a dream dictionary that said dreams about teeth breaking mean the dreamer is afraid of aging. Who isn’t?

Halloween 2003 I was a sophomore studying Moving Images Arts at the College of Santa Fe. My friends Katie, Suzanne, and I decided to be the titular characters from The Flaming Lips album Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. I especially liked this costume because my last name is Wamberg which has spawned many a nickname one of them being Wambot. Here are some sketches of my costume.

Here is a photo of the three of us. The other Pink Robot went for a Gold Fem Bot look by gluing gold funnels to her chest, wearing large studio headphones and yellow safety glasses. Yoshimi decided to wear a Buttercup costume from The Powder Puff Girls. The gas can was brand new and came in handy because the party that night was a kegger. I’ve been told that after serving myself a gallon of what I was calling “Robot Fuel” I began to get pushy with other party guests and then I started declaring myself the winner of the costume contest ( there was no costume contest at the party ). I was taken home and spent the rest of the night in the La Salle dorms bathroom middle stall.
