Made myself a paper cut out of an Erte inspired capital J. I’m thinking of making a whole alphabet of gem cut letters.

My Grandmother Janet Wamberg Clark Byrne, nee Fortney, was a very classy and sophisticated woman. Here she is with her second husband Robert Kenneth Clark. My grandmother was the love of his life and the two of them traveled the world together. Despite her worldly adventures she was always at heart a girl from Kansas City. When I was a little girl she’d take me on shop ‘til you drop sprees down Michigan Avenue in Chicago and she’d always instruct me to use the bathroom before we left the condo so she wouldn’t have to stop shopping on account of a grade schoolers tiny bladder. This is what she would say to me, “Tinkle, pull the chain, and worsh you hands.” I like to imagine it’s what her mother said to her in the 1920s when she was a little girl. In memory of her and all of her magnificent quirks I made these three paper cut outs to hang in my bathroom.

This is a silhouette cut out of my Airedale Terrier Rufus. Rufus is very graceful and often will do arabesques like this one. I made these into cards. I hope my mom doesn’t find this blog. She is getting some Rufus arabesque cards for her birthday.

I was inspired by Art Deco illustrator and designer Erte to make some cut out paper gems similar to his illustrations.

Last week I got a Silhouette Cameo electronic cutter and since then I’ve been very busy cutting things out of metallic and multi-colored card strock. I’ve made a lot of fun stuff. I also made this polished turd. A golden doodle if you will.

I have nightmares every night. They are usually very vivid and if I spend too much time dwelling on them I might never get anything done. One dream however stuck with me so much I decided to illustrate it in a paper cut out collage. In the dream I was looking in a mirror and noticed I had a blue dashed line running across the front of my teeth. I went to try and rub it off and my teeth all snapped along the dotted line and fell into the sink and went down the drain. The sound of the enamel on porcelain sounded so real. I looked it up in a dream dictionary that said dreams about teeth breaking mean the dreamer is afraid of aging. Who isn’t?
